works well but has issues September 3, 2010 . (Northampton UK) Easy to setup, provided your firewall does not block it (zonealarm). I set it to a static IP address and mapped drives, there whenever you want them. Have not used any software that came with it. Speed seems ok. Only problem was when downloading 700gb+ of pictures to it, it dropped off line every 30mins, but it has not given any problems in normal use. It gives two default drives which you can't delete, but you can create and share any of your own. The commuity.WDC website has a extensive forum on these and other WD drives. It's very, very convenience to have all your live data available from any PC on your network.
Has its flaws September 3, 2010 Menz I bought a My Book World Edition after buying a new DLNA TV with the aim of streaming all of my movies and music directly to my TV's media player.
The first thing I did was update the firmware only to realise that this was a bad idea. Whilst the firmware upgrade went without a hitch, it came with a major flaw. The firmware came with a newer version of Twonky Media Server but unfortunately this version does not recognise MKV files! I was seriously cheesed off as MKV files would be the main files I stream! The WD support forums are full of complaints but from what I have read, WD will take their time to fix this, if they bother at all! There is a work around - accessing MKV's via shared music but this did not work on my TV, however it does work with a limited amount if media players.
TAKE NOTICE - Do not update the firmware if you plan to stream mkv's!
That bug aside, everything works as it should. It was a pain setting things up as my win 7 32bit laptop would not recognise the drive on the network. It did magically start working though. It was worse on xp and had to use a separate network scanning tool before I could access the drive on an xp netbook.
Another plus point is the torrent client (CTorrent). Whilst it is basic, it is functional. A word of warning, dont stack multiple torrents in a queue as it will hang the cpu in the my book making the web ui inaccessible which will require a reboot.
All in all, I am fairly happy and would have easily given this drive 5 stars if it was not for the flaw with streaming mkv's. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.
Slight niggles but still good September 1, 2010 Chris L (UK) Okay - Mostly upsides with this product, looks great, very easy to set up and pretty much does what is sets out to do - Ie provide a simple NAS soloution. Also the price is spot on and I think offers excellent value for money - Not only are you getting one of the better looking products out there they are also one of the cheapest. The downside is that originally my Power Mac connected perfectly to it and now it does not. I have tried it wirelessly and wired and it still struggles. A Macbook Pro, Netbook and XP Laptop are all fine it is just the Power Mac. I will have to try to find support on the web etc that solves this but it is annoying it connected fine to start and now does not. That is the only reason for four stars. Other thann that great product that works very well and is extremely easy to get up and running.
Unbelievably slow August 31, 2010 Reviewing things I feel strongly about 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Set up worked OK but this drive is unusable. Took almost 4 days to back up 1 Gb over the wifi in my house. Everything else works fine.
Nice Item! August 31, 2010 BraveChiron I read all the reviews, checked for prices and found this to be the best. The look of the item is great and getting my iMac connected to it was very easy. My only issue is that I did have the box near my router which when the back up was running would take most of the bandwidth. Easily fixed, run the back up when your not on the net.
Overall, so far, no issues and would recommend.
