Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Called "the Black Album" by many (due to its monochrome cover), Metallica marks the group's entrance into the mainstream, with shorter songs, simpler song structures and slower tempos overall. That said, this is an excellent album, featuring some of the best songwriting Metallica has ever done. "Enter Sandman", "Wherever I May Roam" and "God That Failed", despite being slower and more groove-oriented than the band's earlier work, feature the same heavy riffs and heavier rhythms that have always been a feature of Metallica's music. The band goes introspective with "Unforgiven" and proves that they can write a ballad with "Nothing Else Matters", which succeeds better than one might expect. Overall, this is a high-energy album despite its laid-back approach and is in many ways superior to the previous ... And Justice for All, which was weakened by overly complicated song structures and mediocre production. --Genevieve Williams

3 out of 5 stars 666   July 29, 2010
Reijo Piippula (Turku, Finland)
I don't understand why they worship the devil? Well, anyway, there's lots of good moments in this album but there's also songs like "Holier Than Thou" and "The Unforgiven I". Metallic was one of the greatest rock bands but with this album they lost it. It is awful and sad. They wanted to sell more albums, so they gave up! They didn't play fastest, they weren't the baddest, and the weren't the biggest of the BIG FOUR! But they sold more records...because the little girls and boys bought them.

2 out of 5 stars The beginning of the new Metallica   July 19, 2010

This is definitely the album where Metallica started to go downhill.

The vocals have become more poppy than their previous albums, the songs just sound more mellow, the guitar is not as fast and hard to play as the previous albums and the album is just low on the old Metallica energy.

Ofcourse by the way things go this album recieved high levels of praise and tons of rewards and positive reviews, all these factors made this album made Metallica serious money basically making this album a complete sellout.

I practically feel guilty buying a decent, old Metallica album because of the way they are today.

I only gave them two stars because if you wanted to buy one of their worse albums this would be the one to buy as the guitar playing is better than all of the more modern albums by Metallica.

If you want to buy a decent Metallica album then buy one of these:
Kill Em All
Ride The Lightning
Master Of Puppets
And Justice For All

3 out of 5 stars Better than I expected from a band I find very hard to enjoy   June 12, 2010
BS on parade
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Metallica is a band that I just don't get. Their music is plodding, overlong and with little variation. The cloak of none more black darkness they like to project is completely unconvincing. Also their lyrics are weak and sung by a singer who doesn't have much of a voice. Their metallic churn just doesn't hit me in the gut. I've often wondered why people prefer them to Megadeth or Tool who are making much more impressive and varied music from the same heavy metal ballpark.

It was surprising though that I liked it more than I expected when I listened to it for this review (inspired by rewatching the Classic Albums making of documentary). Although it's still plodding etc I heard a bit more merit in their music than I've ever heard before.

1. Enter Sandman (7 out of 10 stars)
It's got a good heavy riff and the light/night lyric is a good pop hook.

2. Sad But True (7 stars)
Nothing great but oddly tuneful, if a tad overlong.

3. Holier Than Thou (5 stars)
It's not bad but it's very unremarkable. The song could be deleted and no one notice.

4. The Unforgiven (6 stars)
Competent metal ballad. I've heard better but then again I've heard much worse.

5. Wherever I May Roam (7 stars)
The heaviest song on the album. Lyrically a bit more involved and honest sounding, although still hardly full of great lines.

6. Don't Tread On Me (7 stars)
More melodic than usual. Also the lyrics are quite good.

7. Through The Never (5 stars)
Generic Metallica churn.

8. Nothing Else Matters (5 stars)
Another ballad. A bit bland.

9. Of Wolf And Man (7 stars)
A more interesting and memorable song with a more involved vocal performance.

10. The God That Failed (5 stars)
By numbers. Neither adds or subtracts from the album.

11. My Friend Of Misery (2 stars)
Has an atmospheric opening guitar part that quickly gets submerged in the standard metal sound. Shame. It's a more subdued song, almost mid-tempo. Really outstays its welcome and becomes very boring and feels endless.

12. The Struggle Within (4 stars)
Makes a lot of noise but nothing interesting is happening. Pretty tiresome but at least it's fairly short.

The album is overlong at 62 minutes. I suggest removing tracks 3, 7, 11 and 12 to make it into a less bloated eight song 44 minute album.

Also I like to make EP playlists out of some albums on my iPod. Tracks 1, 2, 5 and 9 made the cut.

5 out of 5 stars Its a classic.   May 27, 2010
N. K. Boath (London)
One of Metallica's best albums with drum fills, heavy guitar rifts, any rock/metal fan should have this album.

5 out of 5 stars Metallica's Classic Album   April 28, 2010
T. Wright (Scotland, UK)
102 5-star reviews says it all really. This is such a master class in great heavy metal and rock music. This is up there with Pink Floyd 'Dark Side of the Moon', Led Zep's 4 (Physical Graffiti is still my fave above this though), AC/DC's 'Highway to Hell', Fleetwood Mac 'Rumours, Boston, Muse 'Absolution' etc., etc., etc......

Only one solution - buy it!
